Butterfly isn’t your typical spy thriller. Yes, it has shadowy organizations, double-crosses, and brutal showdowns, but at its core, it’s about something more intimate: a father desperate to reconnect with the daughter who’s been turned against him.
The Amazon Prime Video series, which premiered August 13, follows David Jung (Daniel Dae Kim), a former U.S. intelligence operative who faked his own death years earlier. His goal? To keep his daughter Rebecca (Reina Hardesty) safe after a betrayal cost him his team and exposed her identity. But when Rebecca reemerges as an assassin trained by David’s old spy network, Caddis, the stage is set for an emotional and explosive reunion.

How Does Butterfly Season 1 End?
The season closes with David and Rebecca narrowly escaping Caddis’ grasp after exposing Juno (Piper Perabo), David’s former partner and Caddis leader, with the help of her son Oliver (Louis Landau). Against all odds, David rescues Rebecca and spares Juno’s life, extracting a promise that she’ll leave his family alone.
It feels like a resolution until it isn’t.
In the final moments, David prepares to move forward with Rebecca, his wife Eunju (Kim Tae-hee), and their young daughter Minhee. But at a restaurant, everything unravels: David finds Eunju bleeding out on the bathroom floor, unable to identify her attacker. At the same time, Rebecca vanishes. The implication is chilling was Rebecca responsible, or did someone else snatch her?

What Happened to Rebecca?
Rebecca’s disappearance is the finale’s biggest twist. For much of the season, she struggled with resentment toward her father, convinced he abandoned her. Once David revealed the truth that he staged his death to protect her Rebecca started softening, even warming to Eunju and Minhee. So why is she missing at the end?

Who Attacked Eunju?
Eunju’s stabbing is the other major question mark. Was she collateral damage in an attack meant for David? Was she specifically targeted to send a message? Or was the attack somehow tied to Rebecca?
The finale doesn’t give an answer, but the show plants enough seeds to make Eunju’s survival (or death) a critical driver of a possible second season.

What the Cast Has Said About the Ending
Daniel Dae Kim, who also serves as executive producer, explained to TIME why the finale ends on such a tense note:
“We wanted to end on an event that called into question all of the bonds that had been built over season one. David is trying to bring his family back together, and the end shows us it’s not as easy as he thinks.”
Kim also told TV Insider that David still doesn’t fully trust Rebecca:
“I think David is trying to win Rebecca’s trust, but I don’t think he’s 100% trusting her as well.”
That lack of trust now looms over every unanswered question.

Will There Be a Butterfly Season 2?
Amazon hasn’t officially renewed Butterfly yet. The show only just debuted, and streaming platforms often wait to measure audience numbers before greenlighting another season.
Still, the door is wide open. Daniel Dae Kim has expressed excitement about continuing the story, especially since the series is designed as an “international show” with a global scope. Piper Perabo, too, has teased her interest in exploring Juno and David’s complicated past.
If a second season happens, expect Eunju’s stabbing and Rebecca’s disappearance to drive the story forward potentially shifting alliances and pushing David into even darker corners of the spy world.
