If you thought the world of Alien: Earth was cruel before, this week’s episode just proved no one—not even a child—is safe. The series took a devastating turn in “The Fly” with the death of Tootles, one of the most endearing members of The Lost Boys. It was a moment that was as shocking as it was heartbreaking, changing the stakes for every character on the show.
I got to sit down with star Kit Young and episode director Ugla Hauksdóttir to talk about crafting that pivotal scene, what Tootles’ death means for the future, and the unique challenge of playing a child in a synthetic adult body.
How does Tootles die in Alien: Earth?

The death itself is a masterclass in tragic irony. Tootles, who has renamed himself Isaac in a bid to be taken more seriously, is finally trusted by the synth Kirsh (Timothy Olyphant) to feed the new parasitic “flies” alone. He enters the lab with a proud, almost scientific swagger, eager to prove himself. But his childlike curiosity and clumsiness take over; he accidentally breaks the feeding chute and, in a panicked move to complete his task, unlocks the cage door.
Trapped inside with the creature, the horrifying realization dawns on him as he looks at the tray of electronic components—the flies’ food, which is also what he is made of. He is subsequently attacked and killed, his synthetic body breaking down in a gruesome, final way.
Director Ugla Hauksdóttir recalls filming the scene with a sense of dread and awe.
“It crushed me shooting that scene, it crushed me,” she told me.
She emphasized the deliberate choice to make Tootles’ movements awkward and childlike—the full circle he does with the cage door is something an adult would never do. Hauksdóttir wanted the attack to play out in a single, devastating shot, and Young delivered a perfect take on the first try, his mouth filled with the white gooey hybrid blood.
“I remember standing by the monitor, and my heart was racing… thankfully, the performance was just perfect.”

How did Kit Young prepare for his Alien: Earth role?

Young knew his character’s fate from the very beginning, a fact his on-screen family of Lost Boys tried to deny.
“They were like, ‘No, but we’re all androids, so they can just change the batteries and you’ll be back,'” Young laughed. “And I was like, ‘No, guys, it’s happening.'”
His preparation involved extensive workshops during a tricky pre-production period interrupted by the Hollywood strikes. The cast participated in “how-to-be-a-child workshops” and movement sessions to find the “uncanny valley” balance between robotic and childlike. For creator Noah Hawley, Tootles was inspired by know-it-all kids who love random facts.
“The example he uses is like, ‘Do more people die every year from shark attacks or from parasites?'” Young explained. “And you go, ‘Sharks, I guess.’ And they go, ‘Wrong, parasites,’ and then don’t explain why.”
Young saw Tootles (who he primarily thinks of as Isaac) as a “bookish only child” who sought a parental figure in Kirsh, mirroring his posture and demeanor in scenes. “He desperately wants to be this kid who grows up… he’s the Robin to Kirsh’s Batman.”

What does Tootles’ death mean for the future of Alien: Earth?

In a word: everything. Up until this point, The Lost Boys and the audience operated under the assumption that these hybrids were nearly indestructible. Tootles’ death shatters that illusion completely.
“The repercussions are massive,” Young explained. “It’s different when you think you can’t [die], and then someone can… It’s not going to be not a thing.”
This event proves that Prodigy Corporation’s promises are a lie, putting a target on the back of every single hybrid. The show’s emotional stakes are now sky-high. If a sweet, fact-obsessed kid like Tootles can die, no one is safe. It also throws the world of Prodigy into chaos, as their entire product is revealed to be fatally flawed.

Tootles’ death isn’t just another gruesome kill in the Alien franchise. It’s a profound tragedy. These children were given a second chance at life only to be thrust into a nightmare they were falsely told they could survive. His death is the moment Alien: Earth transitions from a creepy sci-fi mystery into a full-blown tragedy where the true monster might not be the alien in the cage, but the corporate greed that placed a child in its path.
New episodes of Alien: Earth air Tuesdays on FX and stream next day on Hulu.
