Ballerina expands the John Wick universe with a new story centered on Eve Macarro, a ballerina assassin seeking revenge for her father’s murder. The movie ends on an ominous note as Eve discovers a fresh bounty on her head, leaving audiences wondering who ordered the hit. Now, director Len Wiseman has shared his theory about the mysterious figure possibly behind this new threat.
Who Could Be Behind the Contract on Eve in Ballerina?

During a recent interview with EW, Len Wiseman addressed the ambiguous Ballerina ending. According to the director, an early draft of the script featured more scenes involving Eve’s mother, a cultist figure believed to have died before the movie’s events. Wiseman suggested that if the mother is still alive, she could have ordered the hit on her daughter after learning about the destruction in Hallstatt and the death of Lena (Catalina Sandino Moreno).
“At one point I had [in the script] that she meets her mother, and we never got there,” Wiseman explained. “We were maybe going to shoot the scene, but that’s always something that we hear, her mother’s dead, but in this world, you never know who’s really dead.”
He continued: “There was an element of, when Eve does get the contract on her at the end, we don’t necessarily know for sure who put that contract on her. And if that path led to that, maybe her own mother [put the hit on her]. That would be brutal.”
Although audiences never meet Eve’s mother in Ballerina, Wiseman remains hopeful that his full vision for this storyline might appear in the future.

Will There Be a Ballerina 2?

It is currently too early to confirm whether Ballerina will receive a sequel. However, the movie’s ending certainly leaves room for more stories featuring Eve Macarro. In a separate interview with USA Today, Wiseman revealed that the idea of the bounty on Eve’s head came from Keanu Reeves, aligning with the John Wick franchise’s ongoing theme of unrelenting consequences.
“It’s ambiguous who put that contract out,” Wiseman said, adding that he has “fun, really dark ideas” regarding the mystery figure behind the hit—further hinting at the potential to explore Eve’s mother’s role.
Ballerina’s strong audience response also bodes well for a possible sequel. The film currently holds a 76% critic score on Rotten Tomatoes and a 94% Popcornmeter score, making it the highest-rated John Wick entry among audiences to date. While critical reception has been mixed, with a 6/10 score from ScreenRant, the positive audience reaction could support the case for Ballerina 2 moving forward.
Ultimately, box office performance will be a decisive factor. If the film maintains strong attendance in the coming weeks, the franchise could soon announce plans for a follow-up.

What Could Ballerina 2 Explore About Eve’s Mother?

The Ballerina ending mirrors a recurring theme in the John Wick franchise—its protagonists are constantly targeted by fellow assassins. In Ballerina’s case, the possibility that Eve’s own mother placed the bounty introduces the potential for an emotionally charged storyline.
The franchise has traditionally prioritized action over emotional narratives, but a sequel centered on Eve’s relationship with her mother could provide fresh depth. If Ballerina 2 can balance its signature high-octane sequences with a compelling, personal conflict, it would stand out within the John Wick universe.
However, given the franchise’s tone, a reconciliation between Eve and her mother is far from guaranteed. Past installments have consistently shown that happy endings are rare in this world. Whether Len Wiseman will be able to bring his vision for Ballerina 2 to life remains uncertain, but there is clearly more to explore in Eve Macarro’s story.
