Denis Villeneuve’s Dune saga has been celebrated for its grand scale and authenticity, thanks to extensive on-location filming in places like Abu Dhabi, Wadi Rum, and the Namib Desert. Villeneuve emphasized how filming in such environments was integral to capturing “the impact of that landscape on the minds of the characters.

However, this commitment to realism came with significant challenges. In an interview with Deadline, Villeneuve revealed how the harsh desert heat posed a considerable hurdle for the cast and crew:

“The heat. There was a moment in the day where the brain felt like a bowl of warm soup. An hour and a half in the middle of the day where I was feeling that actors, myself, everybody, was getting a bit numb and stupid because of the power of the heat.”

To ensure safety and efficiency, the production team implemented midday breaks during the hottest hours. Even during the “cooler season,” the heat remained “taxing and you get tired very quickly under these circumstances.

Villeneuve confirmed that the next film, Dune: Part Three, will primarily draw from Frank Herbert’s Dune Messiah. Unlike its predecessors, the setting shifts from the desert to the heart of a burgeoning galactic empire.

Although Villeneuve remained cautious about revealing too much, he assured fans that the movie would stay true to Herbert’s work:

“I cannot comment on the next movie because when movies are in the process of being written, they are very fragile… But let’s say that it is absolutely deeply inspired by the book, Dune Messiah.
