Dune: Part Two Surpasses $700 Million at the Box Office
According to reports from Collider, Dune: Part Two has officially crossed the $700 million mark at the global box office, with $1.9 million and $3 million coming in from the domestic and international markets, respectively, this past weekend. When combined with the first film’s initial $400 million haul and an additional $30 million from theatrical rereleases, Villeneuve’s ‘Dune’ franchise has amassed an impressive total of over $1 billion at the box office.
While the success of Dune: Part Two has prompted discussions of potential further installments in the franchise, Villeneuve has expressed his intention to cap his adaptation with a third and final film. In a previous interview, the director stated, “Dune: Messiah should be the last Dune movie for me,” referring to the second novel in Herbert’s series, which continues the story of Paul Atreides (Timothée Chalamet).
“I tried my best to keep the poetry of the book, the atmosphere, the colors, the smell, everything that I felt when I read the book. I tried,” Villeneuve added, emphasizing his commitment to faithfully translating the source material to the big screen.
Third ‘Dune’ Film in Development
Following Villeneuve’s remarks, Legendary Entertainment confirmed that it has begun working with the director to develop a third ‘Dune’ film, which is expected to primarily adapt the events of ‘Dune Messiah.’ While official story details are scarce, the director’s previous statements and the source material strongly suggest that the final entry in Villeneuve’s trilogy will conclude Paul Atreides’ story as depicted in Herbert’s novels.
