When Does Ironheart Take Place in the MCU Timeline?

Marvel Studios officially confirmed the placement of Ironheart within the Marvel Cinematic Universe timeline. The series, starring Dominique Thorne as Riri Williams, unfolds approximately six months after the events of Black Panther: Wakanda Forever.
Given that Wakanda Forever is believed to take place in Spring 2025, this positions Ironheart in Fall 2025, making it contemporaneous with other MCU projects such as Ms. Marvel. This timeline was originally set when the show was first developed, even though its release was delayed due to internal restructuring at Marvel Studios.
Producer Sev Ohanian emphasized that the series was always intended to follow shortly after Riri’s debut in Wakanda, despite shifting release plans. Meanwhile, producer Zoie Nagelhout clarified that the events of the series occur less than a year after Wakanda Forever, cementing the show’s setting firmly in late 2025.
This places Ironheart well before Thunderbolts, which is expected to occur around Spring 2027.

How Ironheart Explores Riri Williams in Her Element

Ironheart offers a deeper dive into Riri Williams’ life, showcasing her personal journey in a way that her brief role in Wakanda Forever couldn’t. In the movie, she was portrayed as a brilliant yet out-of-place inventor caught in international conflict.
In the series, however, audiences will follow Riri’s struggles after she is expelled from MIT, prompting her to seek alternative ways to fund her inventions and continue her path as a superhero. This sets the stage for a grounded story centered on resourcefulness, independence, and identity-building.
The show also brings viewers to Chicago, a location rarely explored in the MCU. This fresh setting provides a new corner of the Marvel Universe, distinct from the high-tech labs of Wakanda or the mysticism of other storylines.
Producers indicated that Ironheart will not only focus on Riri’s tech-building journey but also showcase her navigating life on her own terms, far from the royal and superheroic drama that surrounded her debut.

Why Ironheart Timeline Matters for the MCU

With multiple MCU titles floating within the 2020s timeline, fans have often questioned where individual shows and movies fall in the broader chronology. For Ironheart, clarity on its timeline helps establish narrative continuity and avoid the kind of confusion that earlier projects—such as Spider-Man: Homecoming—had stirred.
Placing Ironheart shortly after Wakanda Forever aligns the series with other events in the MCU and ensures that her character arc develops logically across appearances. It also helps position the series as a narrative bridge between Black Panther and larger upcoming crossover events.
Given that the show was originally intended for a 2023 release, the timeline has remained consistent with its production plans, despite delays.
