Even with the DCU’s momentum building Superman launched to strong buzz, Creature Commandos is on the way, and Lanterns is deep in development James Gunn isn’t pretending everything’s been perfect.

When a fan recently asked him on Threads if he’d change any moves since becoming co-CEO of DC Studios, Gunn didn’t hesitate:
“I’d alter moves I made this morning, my friend, much less over the past two years.”
It’s not the first time he’s admitted to second thoughts. Back in February, he told Comicbook there are “always little things” he wishes he’d done differently from asking Superman star David Corenswet to tweak a scene to rethinking certain writer hires. Still, he calls himself “remarkably fortunate” to be in the role, working with a tight-knit team of just 13 people to build an interconnected film, TV, and animation universe.
Which DCU Choices Does James Gunn Regret?

Gunn hasn’t laid out a full list, but one change he’s hinted at is the Justice League cameo in Peacemaker Season 1. While it was a fun surprise for fans at the time, he’s since acknowledged it doesn’t fit neatly into the new DCU continuity. He’s confirmed that “almost all of Peacemaker is canon” except that scene and says Season 2 will “kind of deal” with the discrepancy.
There’s also the natural learning curve of steering a massive franchise from scratch. Gunn admits that some creative hires didn’t work out as planned, though others like Ana Nogueira’s Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow script have been standouts.

Why Admitting Mistakes Makes the DCU Stronger

In a genre where studio heads often double down on questionable calls, Gunn’s willingness to admit regret is refreshing. It signals a flexible approach one where adjustments can be made before problems snowball.
It also reflects his background as a filmmaker first, executive second. Gunn built his reputation on character-driven stories in Guardians of the Galaxy and The Suicide Squad, and that instinct for quality over brand management seems to be carrying over into his DCU leadership.

What’s Next for Gunn’s DCU?

The confirmed slate for DCU Chapter 1: Gods and Monsters includes 11 movies, with Wonder Woman now officially in development. The connective tissue is already forming Superman links to Creature Commandos, Lanterns, and Peacemaker Season 2.
Mistakes will happen. Not every project will land the same way. But if Gunn continues to publicly acknowledge where he’d course-correct, the DCU may avoid some of the pitfalls that plagued the DCEU.
