DreamWorks Animation’s Kung Fu Panda 4 has proven to be a knockout success, crossing the $500 million mark in global box office revenue this past weekend. The fourquel, released through Universal Pictures, has garnered an impressive $324 million in international box office and $509 million worldwide through Wednesday.

As per Deadline, the enduring popularity of the Kung Fu Panda franchise, which began in 2008, has played a significant role in the film’s success. Directed by Mike Mitchell and co-directed by Stephanie Ma Stine, Kung Fu Panda 4 introduced new characters, including the first female villain of the franchise, Viola Davis’ The Chameleon.

According to Margie Cohn, President of DreamWorks Animation, the key to the franchise’s longevity lies in offering audiences a unique viewing experience while retaining the elements they love. The film’s strong audience score on Rotten Tomatoes further solidifies its appeal.
