Monty Miller (Jon Hamm), the powerful CEO of M-Tex Oil, suffered a fatal heart attack. Despite his wife Cami’s (Demi Moore) hopes for his recovery, his heart transplant surgery failed, leaving her widowed and the company leaderless.

The final moments of the Season 1 finale saw Tommy Norris (Billy Bob Thornton) step into Monty’s shoes, taking over M-Tex to fulfill his late boss’s dying wish.

Tommy’s new role as M-Tex CEO forces him into the world of corporate warfare a world he never wanted but can’t escape. He must balance his duties to Cami Miller (Moore), his late boss’s widow, while dealing with threats from cartel leader Galino (Andy Garcia), who once saved Tommy’s life.

Billy Bob Thornton teased that this season will see Tommy pushed “to his breaking point.” In an interview with The Los Angeles Times, he said,

“Tommy isn’t dealing with henchmen anymore. Now he’s got a smart guy on the opposite side of the law who’s his equal. We’re in a chess match.”

“He doesn’t want to take any kind of executive position,” Thornton said. “And I got a feeling, if there were a season 2, he’s going to drag a lot of the landmen into it.”

Later, speaking to Deadline, Thornton hinted at friction between Tommy and Cami Miller as they learn to co-run M-Tex:

“She doesn’t really know the oil business that well, so I’m there with her to show her how these people operate. But when it gets weird and difficult, she’s going to need me — and that’s where things get messy.”

Thornton described Tommy’s dual life as “a tornado”: an oilman, an executive, and a family man all at once. His arc this season appears to be about finding a way to survive that storm or be swallowed by it.
