Did Player 456 Die in Squid Game Season 3?
Squid Game Season 3 opened with Gi-hun being forced to participate again following the collapse of the rebellion. As punishment, he was stripped of his right to vote on continuing or ending the game. Emotionally broken, Gi-hun displayed a darker side early in the season. During the Hide and Seek game, he killed his old friend Dae-ho, who betrayed the group in the uprising.
This moment revealed Gi-hun’s internal collapse, showcasing that he had reached a dangerous emotional state. However, things began to shift when Geum-Ja (Player 149) reminded him of his purpose: protecting Jun-hee and her baby.
Gi-hun took that purpose seriously, especially during the Jump Rope game. He carried the baby across the platforms, saving her life. This act ultimately led to Jun-hee’s suicide, believing her child was now safe with Gi-hun.
As the season progressed, Gi-hun reached the final game. The last remaining players were him and the baby, who replaced her mother as Player 222. Myung-gi (Player 333), the baby’s father, fell to his death right before the final round began.
Faced with an impossible choice, Gi-hun had to either kill the baby to win or sacrifice himself. In a defining moment, he chose death, allowing the baby to win and sending a defiant message to the Front Man and the VIPs.

Why Did Gi-hun’s Sacrifice Matter in Squid Game Season 3?
Seong Gi-hun’s decision to end his life rather than take that of an innocent child sealed his place as the moral center of Squid Game. Even after his moment of darkness earlier in the games, his final act was one of redemption and principle.
Rather than continue his fight against the Front Man through force, Gi-hun delivered a symbolic message: humanity still exists, even in the darkest conditions. He resisted the system’s manipulation, refusing to become what they wanted him to be.
This decision didn’t just impact the VIPs, who likely dismissed it, but it resonated with In-ho (The Front Man). During the chaos caused by the Coast Guard’s arrival, In-ho ensured the baby’s safety, reflecting Gi-hun’s influence.
In a final act of respect, The Front Man delivered Gi-hun’s belongings and the rest of his prize money to his daughter in Los Angeles. He also entrusted the baby and her share of the winnings to his brother Jun-ho, believing he could raise her well.
Though Gi-hun died, his legacy lived on in both the baby and The Front Man. His story ended in sacrifice, but not without purpose.
