Was the conjuring mirror planned from the beginning?
In a word, no. In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, director Michael Chaves was candid about the origins of this idea. It wasn’t a masterstroke of planning by franchise creator James Wan from the beginning. Instead, it was a incredibly lucky coincidence that emerged during the writing process.
Chaves explained that he wanted an artifact to be the central focus of this final film, not just a “trophy” from a case. Screenwriters Richard Naing and Ian Goldberg were researching potential artifacts and stumbled upon the real “Conjuring Mirror” in the Warrens’ collection. The title of the object was a eureka moment.
“It was really just luck,” Chaves admitted. “I loved ending on it, and I love that photo.”
He saw it as a “full circle” moment that aligned perfectly with the theme of his film.
