According to CBS, Madonna’s birthday festivities took an unfortunate turn when she went horseback riding with an assistant at her Ashcombe House estate. While riding a new horse she wasn’t accustomed to, Madonna lost control and fell, sustaining severe injuries. Her children, Rocco and Lourdes, were present at the home but were not with her during the accident.

The “Like a Virgin” singer was immediately rushed to the hospital by her husband, filmmaker Guy Ritchie. She was treated for her injuries, which included three cracked ribs, a broken collarbone, and a broken hand. While she was able to walk and talk, her publicist, Liz Rosenberg, stated that Madonna was unlikely to be “hanging from a disco ball” anytime soon, referring to her energetic stage performances.

Despite the setback, Madonna remained determined to continue her musical journey. Her album Confessions on a Dancefloor, described as “future disco” music, was scheduled for release in November 2005, just a few months after the accident.

Rosenberg also revealed that horseback riding was a relatively new hobby for Madonna, who had embraced the English countryside lifestyle and had been riding for only four or five months prior to the incident.
