As Amazon’s highly anticipated Fallout series adaptation prepares for its release later this month, the show’s creators and stars have started sharing insights into the production process and their experiences working on the post-apocalyptic project.
Nolan’s Love for Fallout Began with Fallout 3
As Per EuroGamer, Fallout executive producer Jonathan Nolan – known for co-writing films like The Dark Knight and Interstellar with his brother Christopher Nolan – revealed his love for the Fallout games began with Fallout 3. Nolan admitted,
“I think Chris had tasked me with writing The Dark Knight Rises, and so if that movie was slightly delayed, it was probably in part because of Fallout 3.”

Challenges of Adapting an Open-World Game
Nolan also shared the difficulties of adapting an open-world video game for television, as opposed to a novel.
“Usually when you’re adapting something, like a novel, you’re adding to it,”
Nolan explained.
“With a video game, you’re taking things away, like the audience’s sense of freedom.”

Lucy: A “Dangerous Ned Flanders”
Reflecting on her role as the youthful Vault dweller Lucy, Ella Purnell shared that the Fallout team described her character as a blend of Leslie Knope and Ned Flanders, but with an underlying sense of danger.

Fallout Series’ Social Commentary
Walton Goggins, portraying the mutated outlaw Ghoul, commended Fallout for its exploration of themes around morality and the decline of society. He highlighted the current state of chaos, noting a degradation of moral values and a loss of hope. Goggins emphasized that, in many aspects, Fallout mirrors the evolving world we find ourselves in.
