While the mood was generally upbeat at the recent BAFTA awards, the voice actors shared some serious concerns and harsh criticism regarding the growing issue of AI voiceover tools, particularly unauthorized reproductions of their own voices.

According to PCGamer, At the recent BAFTA awards, Eurogamer caught up with the voice actors behind Baldur’s Gate 3 and other major game releases of 2023. Amelia Tyler, the narrator of Baldur’s Gate 3, described the disturbing experience of coming across multiple instances of her performance being replicated through AI, including for “upsetting and unseemly purposes.” She recounted finding her voice being used to read “r*pe p*rn,” a situation she found deeply distressing.

Tyler emphasized that this type of usage is “stealing not just my job but my identity,” and believes that such unauthorized use of an actor’s voice should be made illegal.

Contractual Concerns and the Potential for Abuse

Other Baldur’s Gate 3 voice actors, such as Raphael actor Andrew Wincott and Karlach actress Samantha Béart, expressed trepidation about the potential for contractual abuses with AI performance cloning, even with the recent SAG-AFTRA contract updates.

Actors from other high-profile games, like Alan Wake 2‘s David Harewood and Final Fantasy 16‘s Ben Starr and Ralph Ineson, shared similar concerns about the implications of this technology.

Not all the voice actors were entirely pessimistic, however. Neil Newbon, who voiced the character Astarion in Baldur’s Gate 3, expressed optimism that the gulf in quality between AI copies and real actors’ performances would prevent widespread abuse. He believes that the “craft” and “magic” that actors bring to their work will ultimately be valued by the industry.
